Hay fever (allergic rhinitis)

**Hay fever (allergic rhinitis)** is a common allergic reaction that affects the nose. It occurs when the immune system overreacts to allergens such as pollen, dust mites, mold, or pet dander. These substances cause symptoms like sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy eyes, and watery eyes. It can also sometimes lead to a sore throat or headaches.

Seasonal hay fever is triggered by pollen from trees, grasses, or weeds. In contrast, perennial hay fever is caused by allergens found all year round, such as dust mites or pet hair. The exact symptoms can vary from person to person, and the severity can range from mild to severe, disrupting daily activities or sleep.

While hay fever shares some symptoms with a cold, it typically does not cause a fever. Treatment options include avoiding known allergens, using over-the-counter or prescription medications, and, in some cases, receiving allergy shots. Understanding and managing hay fever can greatly improve quality of life, especially during peak allergy seasons.
