Common Winter Illnesses

  • Influenza remains one of the most serious seasonal viruses. It spreads rapidly and can cause high fever, fatigue, and body aches. Annual flu vaccination is strongly advised, especially for vulnerable groups.
  • Common colds and RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) often affect children and older adults, with symptoms ranging from coughs to breathing difficulties. RSV can lead to bronchiolitis or pneumonia in infants.
  • COVID-19 continues to circulate with increased activity during winter. Practise personal hygiene, monitor for flu-like symptoms, isolate and recover at home if unwell.
  • Asthma and COPD exacerbations are frequent, triggered by cold air and indoor allergens. Ensure inhalers and medications are current and accessible.
  • Gastroenteritis, including norovirus ("winter vomiting bug"), can spread quickly in communal settings. Hand hygiene is key.
  • Lastly, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) may impact mood and energy due to reduced sunlight. Light therapy and mental health support can help.

Why Winter Worsens Illness

Cold, dry air impairs the mucosal barrier in our airways, making it easier for viruses to invade. Indoor heating, closed spaces, and low vitamin D levels also play a role in weakening immunity.

How to Stay Well in Winter

  • Get your annual flu shot.
  • Practise good hand hygiene and ventilation.
  • Maintain a healthy diet and consider vitamin D supplementation. Stay active through regular walks and exercise.
  • Keep warm and prioritise sleep.

Winter may bring its challenges, but with proactive care, we can stay resilient and well throughout the season. Let’s take this time to build your immunity and nurture your body.

If you have respiratory symptoms, see your GP early—prevention and early treatment are key.
